In early 2009, total sales of the Fiesta since its launch 33 years earlier passed the 3,500,000 mark in Britain, making it the second most popular car ever sold there after the Ford Escort. It has been Britain's most popular new car in 1990, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2009.
