The name "Altima" originally referred to a trim line of the Nissan Laurel mid size auto sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1993, Nissan stopped its much reprimanded Stanza, swapping it with the US made Altima, while remaining a conservative auto. The exact first Altima rolled off the mechanical production system on June 15, 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altimas had been constructed in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi, plant started handling supplemental Altimas to meet heightened request.
